Only Clone Wars fans need apply. If you're a hardcore fan who's seen every episode and has followed every story arc and can't get enough Clone Wars, then this is a decent addition to the saga. If you're merely a casual fan who couldn't tell the Black Sun from Death Watch you're probably better off avoiding this one.

The story feels like a 3-4 episode story from The Clone Wars itself. It even follows a similar format, and you can tell where each part of the story would've been broken into separate episodes. The downside to the comic format is that it's easy to rush through the entire book in half an hour. A lot of scenes go by quickly, and a bit of subtly is lost. On the plus side, due to the fact that this is a comic, it can go slightly darker than the show could, and a few panels even show a little carnage and blood.

If you're looking for closure to Darth Maul's story, you may be disappointed. The ending is open ended, and although it hints at things to come, there is no absolute conclusion for Maul's character. While Maul himself doesn't get closure, one other important character from the show does meet their definite end, so the entire story isn't a complete waste.

All in all, the book is basically just a fun little adventure featuring Dooku and Grievous fighting against Maul and his forces. Things end up a little more complicated than that, but not by much. If the idea of Separatists vs Terrorists and dueling Dark Lords sounds fun, then you could do worse than this book. But if you're looking for a deeper, more meaningful experience, look elsewhere.

Being a huge fan of the clone wars cartoon I was really mad when Disney cancelled the series but at least we got this excellent comic that shows us what might have been. Clearly the best Star Wars comic in my humble opinion
This was a spectacular comic! Especially for anyone who loves the Sith! This should most certainly have been made into part of the Clone Wars series via Cartoon Network (and now Netflix) but I'm really glad they made a comic format. It's a really great read with a whole lot of action!
The art is ok.

The story is decent and the dialogue passes. It's entertaining because it picks up after Sidious defeated Maul in season five or six of the Clone Wars. There are many factions that will confuse a novice Star Wars reader.

All the main players from the dark side are here, and that gives it an event quality. Fun, but not deep.
Star Wars Darth Maul Son of Dathomir picks up where the clone wars left off. Bridging the gap between Clone Wars and Rebels. You follow Darth Maul who's become a leader of a criminal syndicate. Follow him on his quest of revenge. The comic feels and reads like clone wars lost episodes that were never made. Darth Maul get more character development written very well. The art is well drawn and colored. Reading this made me love Darth Maul as a character. Before he was the guy that looked cool and was brought back from the dead because he looks cool. To one of the more developed star wars characters. Hands down one of the best star wars comics on the market. Couldn't recommend more.
First things first, I'm reviewing this book as someone with only a passing knowledge of the Clone Wars and Rebels television shows. Fans of the series will absolutely enjoy this book more than I did (just judging by some of the other reviews), but for those who haven't seen the show like myself then this book is not for you. Son of Dathomir takes place during the Clone Wars after the events of the show (Maul was revealed to have survived his encounter with Obi Wan, he and his brother joined forces with Maul's mother to oppose the Republic and the Confederacy, Maul's brother was killed during a confrontation with Sidious) and sees Maul as Sidious' prisoner. The forces that had assembled under the brothers and Maul's mother (Talzin) free Maul and hope to continue the expansion of their fledgling criminal empire. Sidious hopes to use the Separatist forces to wipe out Talzin (who he sees as the bigger threat) and sends Dooku and Grievous to deal with Maul's forces. The battle pins Maul in until finally Talzin is drawn out and the two groups have a final showdown. The comic is absolutely meant to connect Maul's story from the Clone Wars show with his future appearances in Rebels so again this is really a book written for fans of those shows. There are numerous references to and characters from the series so again while the book is entertaining and features some cool action it will be lost on those who aren't familiar with the show.
Before I go into this review I should point out that yes, this comic is a bit open-ended. If you want to see where Maul goes next he does show up in Disney's Star Wars Rebels cartoon. That being said, this collection is actually a reprinting by Marvel of a comic originally published by Dark Horse, the previous license holders for Star Wars comics. The story is adapted from drafts of some unproduced episodes of the Star Wars The Clone Wars cartoon in production before it's cancellation. The story is all about Darth Maul, as he fights to get revenge on his former Master. But as war rages, does Maul truly have the upper hand? This comic is amazing. Each issue feels like an episode of the show, and it works better for it. Even though it would have been great to see this story in The Clone Wars show, it's still nice to have a comic this good instead. The Clone Wars may be over now, but for many Star Wars fans it's legacy will never be forgotten.
